Have you heard of Marie Kondo? She's a Japanese organizing consultant, who wrote the book "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up". She now has a Netflix show and she's pretty much all over social media. While I've never read her book, I can gather a lot from the show trailer, articles I've read, along with social media posts here and there. It's all about getting rid of the clutter and keeping only the possessions that bring you "joy". Well, for someone like me who loves clothes, it's hard to let go of anything in my closet!
So I started small. Last weekend I cleaned out my dresser drawers and under my bed. I did some damage and I feel really good about my decluttering method - a little at a time. As I held up each item and asked myself "does this bring me joy" I found that most things that didn't were items that I've worn once or things that aren't easily styled. An example being a sequins tank top or a purple cocktail dress, both of which I decided to give away...But it was nice to review my closet and see what my style looks like now, 2019 Meghan.
This process, which I am now half way done with, helped me reconnect to my personal style and how I want to dress and shop. I like neutrals and when I buy something that is bright color or a floral print, I tend to wear it once and never reach for it again. This year I am going to make an effort when shopping and think twice before purchasing something that is outside of my go-to for styles or colors.
This outfit today is one of my favorites because it's super comfortable, classic, and easy. Each of these pieces I've had for a while and none of them are going in the giveaway bags. These pieces can be styled 1,000 different ways and I am really happy with the way they've held up. My sweater is around 3 years old from Aritzia, so the current style is no longer available. But Aritzia is a great place to buy classic sweaters. They are really good at having killer neutrals and their stuff lasts forever. My leather jacket was a birthday gift 4 years ago and it is one of my most prized possessions. It goes with me on every trip and is super easy to dress up or down. This sucker is staying with me forever!
Whether you want to rediscover your style or just start 2019 with a fresh and clean closet, I suggest looking up Marie Kondo and her organizing and decluttering ways!
