It's easy to say that my Louis Vuitton Neverfull is the best investment I've made in the past 10 years. Yup, I've had this sucker for 10 YEARS! I bought it the summer between my sophomore and junior year of college after saving every penny I made that summer. Looking back, it probably wasn't the most financially responsible decision of my young life, but I don't regret it for a moment!
When I say it's the best investment, what I mean is that if I sold it today, I could sell it for more money than what I paid for it in 2011. I paid $775 for my bag then and now similar bags to mine are sold on The Real Real for $1,375. That's insane! While I don't think I'll ever sell my bag, it's nice to know it's appreciated in value. It was also such a great investment because it DOES NOT show wear. I've had it for 10 years and honestly, the bag looks pretty dang good for it's age. Other than MINOR wear on the handles, the bag looks like I just bought it and trust me - I've used it A LOT over the years.
If you're looking to invest in a tote bag, there are a few things to consider. Number one, and the most important is how much you want to send. Back when I bought my bag, I didn't have any other expenses, so I was okay with spending my money on a bag. I am not encouraging anyone to use their savings to buy a bag. Rather, save save save and spend it when you're financially able!
The second thing to think about is how long you want it to last. Do you want it because it's trendy or because it's a classic. Neither is wrong, but try and think about its longevity. Do you want to spend a lot of money on something you'll be using in 10 years or spend less on something that won't last as long. There is no rhyme or reason behind styles coming and going, but one thing I can say is if you're going to purchase an expensive bag, buy from a designer that you know will hold its value, if not increase!
